One of the main themes of Death Note is that boredom can kill. Especially in the hands of a student named Light Yagami. He's your average student, aside from being quite brilliant. He's got a normal family and goes to a normal school. One day though, while being rather bored in class, he saw a notebook fall from the sky. He picked it up, read through it, but he didn't believe it at all. That is, until he tried it for himself.
He met the shinigami Ryuuk shortly after touching the Death Note-- and when he realised just how much power he had, he began to create a vision of the perfect world: Where unforgivable criminals died at his hands and the innocent people lived free of worry. Most of all, he would become God of this new world, he saw no flaws with this. After all, how can you trace a killer who leaves no mark on the people they kill? This was the birth of Kira, and over the next few days, Light began to show the world exactly what he intended to do with it and the people who disobeyed the rules.
But yeah, lack of evidence and a paranormal way of murder doesn't stop certain people. Namely, an detective named L. L is the greatest detective in the world, unmatched by any other. L suspects Light right off the bat at their first meeting, despite the chance of Light being Kira at a mere 3%, the percentage raises as he continues to talk to him. Light also viewed L as a threat very early on, knowing how important it is to kill him as soon as possible. After this point, it's a game of wits. Though Light is often betrayed by his own pride, making L more and more sure it's him.
When L had him as cornered as he could be, Light gave up the Death Note to Ryuuk. He completely forgot all his memories of the Death Note, and joined Light in the search for Kira. A third Kira, Kyosuke Higuchi, gets the Death Note from Rem. Together, they hunt down this third Kira along with other investigators. He uses the paper from the Death Note in his watch to kill Higuchi, then he manipulated Rem into killing L and Watari. ): LOVE IS OVER.
Light then succeeds him as the new L. However, Mello and Near figure this out, and corner him with their combined effort. At the end of the series, we learn Light is a kick-ass swimmer. End. Mun Contact
